With the rise of  technology across the globe, there has been a drastic rise in the amount of time people spend in the virtual world. Although technology has made the world a smaller place with unlimited knowledge at one’s fingertips, it has a negative impact on human psychology as well. A 2011 survey found that 95% of youngsters aged 12–17 use the Internet, 81% have a social media account, and 51% admit to checking it daily.

Increased screen time among global youth and children can mean that they are losing touch with the reality around them. Studies prove that school children exposed to more screen time have been found to be better at searching and finding information, yet less able to remember it. Technology may even be changing how individuals process emotions. Children exposed  to higher levels of screen time are less able to read nonverbal cues and unable to show empathy in social situations.

Keeping these factors in mind, it becomes more crucial that young students are provided with proper counselling  at the right time to help them navigate their lives better and help them become more grounded well developed individuals. It is the responsibility of the society as a whole to  guide the overstimulated young minds in their careers , as well in personal and social lives.

Mr. Rohit Mohanka, who is an alumnus of Mahendra Muni Saraswati Shishu Vidya Mandir, College Road, Madhupur Deoghar, Jharkhand is a teacher by profession and deals with adolescent children every day through his institution ‘Genext Education’. He along with his sister runs the institute for Neet and IIT preparation. His institute not only help students academically, but the team consisting of six teachers and fifteen mentors provide counselling to the students when the need arises.

Aside from helping the students as mentioned above, he uses his institute as an instrument of social work as well. The team headed by Mr. Mohanka visits individual schools in the nearby areas to list students from economically backward families and provide free classes to them along with necessary educational kits. They have helped more than 25 students  in such manner. If the local school needs help with classes, they also provide free of cost classes for them. At the time of festivals the team distribute gifts in orphanages to spread festive cheer among those who have no families of their own.

During conversation with Mr. Rohit Mohanka, he elaborated that his school had helped him to understand the value of family, society and motherland which in turn inspired him to give back to the society.

He further added that “the way today’s generation is addicted to technology mostly mobile phones, they are forgetting about the reality and spending their time living in an unrealistic virtual world. The result is that the youth are giving up very easily and becoming more impatient. That is why proper counselling classes are required for their better upbringing.”

Our society requires more teachers like Mr. Rohit Mohanka, who goes beyond the call of their profession to help their students grow individually and become well developed socially responsible adults.
