Although India has made a lot of progress in the field of education since its independence, it still faces several hurdles. One of the major roadblocks, is the dismal condition of  school infrastructure across the country, specifically in villages or hard to reach areas.

Amenities like toilets, computer labs ,science labs and even appropriate number of classrooms are missing.

Situated in the small village of  Sarbhoka in Manendragarh Tehsil of Koriya district in Chhattisgarh, Vidya Bharati school  Saraswati Shishu Mandir High School, has been running since the year 1996. It operates under Saraswati Shiksha Sansthan Gram Bharti. This school underwent various struggles since its inception. It started in a rented building, with only 16 students and highest class till 1. The rented building had no clean running water or toilets.

All these hardships never slowed down the school’s movement towards quality education and grew from strength to strength. Presently the school has moved from the rented place to a building of its own with 12 classrooms and 431 students. The highest class of the school has increased to 10. Proper toilets with access to hand pumps has been built.

Shri Kripal Ram Rajwade, principal of the school is proud of the fact that this year 3 students from his school has been selected under Jawahar Utkarsh Yojna launched by State government of Chhattisgarh for meritorious Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes students. The scheme provides selected students the opportunity to get admitted in well known Gov. schools of the state, where their education will be free of charge.

The  students of the school actively participate in sports like khoko, kabaddi, athletics at district level. Also in the recent board exams the students secured an average percentage above 80%, which is a great achievement in itself.

The school committee plans to increase the highest class to 12 and provide better amenities to its students in the future. To achieve this aim the school needs proper library, computers for the students and a bigger toilet block.

It was the grit and determination of those who are associated with this school that it has managed to come this far in such a short span of time.
