Mathematics as a subject is an important part of all school curriculum. While it’s easy for a small percentage of lucky children, most children find numbers and math very difficult. One of the best form of making learning mathematics easy for children is using Abacus.

The abacus is also known as a counting frame and is a calculating tool that was in use in the ancient Near East, Europe, China, and Russia. It is one of the most creative ways to count numbers easily, effectively and quickly. Many countries across the world use it to teach basic calculations and mental maths to children.  Few of the key benefits of this training are :

  • Faster and more accurate calculations by students

  • Stress free and easy way of learning maths

  • Enhancement of problem-solving abilities

  • Better focus and improvement of logical reasoning among students

  • Strengthening of mental skills like visualization and memory

  • Better  memory and heightened creativity

Pugeesh K an alumnus of Vyasa Vidya Peethom, Kallekkad, Kerala and founder of Smart Kids Abacus, Kozhikode, came across this technique of learning maths accidentally. He was working in Vidyarthi Parishad at that time and was travelling to Delhi for work. In the train, he saw a child doing mathematical calculations very fast and effortlessly so he asked the kid’s parent about it. He learned that the child was taking training in Abacus. This peaked his interest and he went on to meet the teacher who was training the child. He came to know that this method of learning math is not very prevalent in India and decided to travel across India to gain more knowledge on the subject.

After extensive research he came to discover a fairly new method of learning Abacus, using two hands instead of the conventional one handed approach taught by most institutions. This method was based on neuroscience and vedic mathematics, that has the added advantage of using both sides of the brain, thus resulting in better brain development among the children.Constant practice of this method for 34 months enables a child to solve 100 simple calculations within 2 minutes.

Pugeesh K, felt that this knowledge should be accessible to more students and started training children from home. Gradually the institution grew to encompass 24 branches across Kerala consisting of 40 teachers and 20 support staff. Approximately 2000 students from different districts of Kerala had got training in this skill till now. He is thinking of developing the training technique further and spreading it across India as well as internationally.

Mr. Pugeesh, received Junior Chamber International Entrepreneur Award 2015 and award from Hindu Economic Forum in 2017-18 for his exceptional work. He was also honored by District Mayor of Kozhikode for the same.

Apart from his institution Pugeesh K had participated in Vedic Mathematics program and wrote about its impact in his book on Abacus.

According to Mr. Pugeesh, his inspiration came from Late Bhaskar ji who had started Vidya Bharati School, Vidya Niketan and from his Guruji from Vyasa Vidya Peethom. Furthermore he credits his school principal, Mr G.Devan and Mr. Chenthamarakshan from Vyasa Vidya Peethom for encouraging him on his journey,

Taking inspiration from his teachers he wants to extend his helping hands to fellow alumni who are interested to learn the skill to join his organisation, get trained and start a career in the same.
