India is the biggest democracy in the world, with a population of over one billion. In a country where nearly two-thirds of the population is formed by young people under the age of 35 years, the youth’s involvement in politics and their opinions on nation building carry a lot of weight. Today’s youth have become very vocal about their thoughts and viewpoint on nation building, thanks to social media, making  it is the right time to engage and train them so that they can grow to become enlightened citizens and future leaders.

Shubham Mishra an alumnus of Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay Saraswati Vidya Mandir, Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh was always interested in politics and its impact on the development of our nation. His chance to get a deeper perspective on the working of Indian government came when he got selected for the membership of Dainik Jagran’s Youth Parliament.

Concept of the Youth Parliament is very unique. It gives practical information about the workings of Indian Parliament and parliamentary laws to selected youths through the concept of 'learning while working' in real parliamentary setup. Members who show good results in the Youth Parliament also gets an internship with policy-makers like MPs-MLAs and Administrative Officers.

Shubham, passed the merit examination held by the organisation to get selected among 50 youths that are chosen from each city. After clearing certification program he chose ‘city development’ as his area of work for his project.

During his project work in Lucknow city Shubaham identified several areas where change was necessary.  He found that there is a huge requirement of sensitizing people about the adverse effects of plastic pollution in the city. He informs us that, per day plastic consumption in Lucknow is 100 grams in each household which cannot be recycled. This creates a huge nuisance regarding their proper environment friendly disposal. More over plastic decomposition releases harmful chemicals, unbalancing the surrounding ecosystem. This prompted him to regularly runs campaigns in various malls of Lucknow to educate the youth and shop owners encouraging them to shift to more eco-friendly products.

Shubham is a also a big campaigner in favour of tree plantation who aims to increase the level of plantation 10 times per year in the city. Apart from tackling environmental issues, he is also a member of ‘Give My Rights’ organization where he has taken an oath to educate villagers regarding their fundamental rights and the impact that their votes can have on the country.

Being an alumnus of Vidya Bharati school, Shubham says that the culture of working for the development of one’s country taught in his school has added fuel to his natural inclination towards social welfare through politics. He believes if more youths with positive aim join politics they can steer India towards a brighter future.
