Nishant Kumar, an alumnus of Goverdhan Lal Trehan Sarswati Bal Mandir Sr. Sec School, Nehru Nagar, Delhi, has been involved with social service in a plethora of different issues.

From a very young age, any form of social injustice or crisis deeply disturbed Nishant and the gritty youth undertook every possible step to correct the wrong. The Psychology graduate from  Indraprastha University and Social worker at BJP Purvanchal Morcha Delhi, over a very short period of time has been engaged in several social services, few of which are as follows:

  • Traffic Congestion -  Several roads in Delhi such as Sangam Vihar Thana Road, Ratiya Marg and Tigri was facing severe traffic congestion, causing problem for the general public. Nishant took up the issue and wrote about it to the Joint Commissioner, Traffic, which ultimately led to posting of more traffic personnel to deal with the issue.

  • Governmental Policies / schemes -  The Delhi government educational scheme ‘Jai Bhim Mukhyamantri Pratibha Vikas Yojna’  provided scholarship for quality coaching to financially weak students from SC and ST categories. Nishant felt the need for higher inclusivity, and appealed to the government to consider students from general quota as well. On 2nd  September 2019, his request was approved and general category students for economically weak backgrounds could also apply for assistance under the scheme.

  • Public Welfare -  DDA Park area in Sangam Vihar, Delhi, was not maintained properly. It was unclean and dark, without proper lighting. The place was becoming unsafe and residents nearby were facing several inconveniences. Due to Nishant’s appeal, action was taken by the Delhi Development Authority and orders were  given for restoration of lights and cleaning of the park.

  • Environmental Protection -  Recently Nishant has taken up the  issue of water scarcity problem in Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary. In the forest, there are hardly any water structures to support the wildlife population of the area which led Nishant to contact the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, suggesting him on construction of water bodies in the area. In November 2019, Dr. K.S. Jayachandran (Deputy Conservator of Forest, headquarters), directed Deputy Conservator of Forest (South Forest Division) to take necessary action for development of water harvesting pits in the forest.

  • Development of Transgender community -  In Indian society, transgenders often face several social and educational hurdles.  The inequality faced by the community, prompted Nishant to forward a request to Mr. S.S Gill (IAS), Director Higher Education for providing free education to the people belonging to the transgender community. His request was forwarded to the Registrar of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University  for necessary action.

  • Health Care -  Delhi State Cancer Institute Janakpuri, was facing shortage of doctors, leading to inconvenience to the patients, specifically in the OPD section. Nishant’s request to the Special Secretary (department of health) to look into the situation, has resulted in Dr Surendra ( Asst. Director Coordination Delhi State Cancer Institute) to direct senior faculties of Delhi State Cancer Institute (East) to work in the Delhi State Cancer Institute Janakpuri, until a permanent solution can be made.

  • Women Safety - Nishant is well aware of transportation problems for working women. In an effort to deal with the issue, he wrote a letter to Lieutenant Governor of Delhi requesting him to start ‘Surakhsha Rath Sewa’ service, so that women could be dropped at their home by police vehicles at night if they become stuck in difficult situations.

According to Nishant, the moral values taught to him in his school, is the source of inspiration behind his endless fight for social betterment. The ardent follower of Sahid Bhagat Singh, believes that one should always be ready to help others, no matter how small the issue.
