Indian Government has made considerable strides towards improvement of Health and Sanitation in the country. Since independence, life expectancy at birth has doubled, the number of epidemics has reduced and focus is being given on ensuring access to clean water and sanitation services to all. The launch of Government of India’s flagship scheme, the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission), has resulted in more than 12 million toilets being constructed in rural areas.

In spite of the headway made, several challenges still remain. 44% of Indian population continues to defecate in the open mainly due to inadequate number of toilets as well as lack of proper knowledge regarding the importance of hygiene.

It is not possible for the government alone to make all the required changes unless efforts are made by non governmental sector as well. With the motive of lending a helping hand towards bringing positive changes, Sudarshan Mazumdar, an alumni of Saraswati Vidya Mandir, Munger, along with other members of the NGO ‘WASH’ are working tirelessly in the city of Munger, Bihar.

With more than 10 members engaged in Munger, and over 200 members pan India, the organization is persistently working in the field of hygiene in various government schools. This includes activities like constructing washrooms, repairing existing public toilet buildings and training both teachers and students about the importance of hygiene.

Being the supervisor of Hygiene department of this ITC funded organization, Mr. Sudarshan Mazundar has worked for over a decade in Munger with unwavering focus. He firmly believes that if students are made aware of the importance of maintaining proper health and hygiene then in future it will have greater positive impact on the society as a whole.
