Bhaskar Sonowal, the son of a farmer is studying MBBS in Guwahati Medical College

It was a moment of celebration, on a summer afternoon, in 2018, for the people this small village of Upper Assam. Bhaskar Sonowal, the son of a farmer from Salmari village of Dhemaji district in Assam, made the whole village proud by clearing the medical entrance examination. 

His story began in his childhood when he saw his father working in the farm braving the summers, rains and winters. Inspite of growing up in a humble background, Bhaskar was determined to become a doctor. “My aim in life was not money, but I wanted to grow up and serve people in need. And what could be a better way to get rid of their pain than this?” said Bhaskar with a smile. 

In spite of all the odds, his parents supported him immensely when Bhaskar enrolled in a coaching centre after completing his 12th examination.  

“Since I am very strong willed, I was firm to clear the medical entrance examination and secure good rank so that I can take admission in Guwahati Medical College – one of the best in the state and also the most affordable one”, mentioned Bhaskar. 

Coming from a small village Bhaskar knew how difficult it was to get a good doctor at times, especially during an emergency or critical illness. He feels it is his duty to offer treatment to people who stay in remote areas, where medical facility is scarce. 

“After taking admission in Guwahati Medical College, I got associated with the RSS organization there. We regularly organize medical camps and blood donation camps”, mentioned Bhaskar. 

Bhaskar, an alumnus of Shankardev Shishu Niketan, Shalmari, is currently in the 3rd year of his MBBS degree. He wants to become a surgeon in the later years of his career.
